Why Banks Check Information
Banks in Japan check identity, address, residence status, and purpose of account use. This is related to rules against misuse of bank accounts.
Common Documents
You may need your residence card, passport, address information, phone number, seal or signature, student card, employee card, or other documents.
After Moving
If you move, update your address with the bank. Bank letters and cards may not arrive if your address is old.
Before Leaving Japan
If you leave Japan, ask the bank what to do with your account. Do not give or sell your bank account to another person.
If You Have Trouble
Ask the bank what document is missing. If Japanese is hard, bring someone who can help or use a bank with foreign language support.
